We made The Garden as a minimalist response to our 2013 release, The Shadows. Where the latter relied on dense orchestrations and choirs of female voices, The Garden investigates the inherent beauty of two voices, isolated and propped up with minimal instrumentation - long ringing notes, the echo of the room, the beauty of several notes held.
Written over the course of several years by Hazel Rickard, The Garden draws from experiences ranging from backyard tent living in Portland, OR, and the isolation of the windy Victorian mansion at ArtFarm Nebraska, to a five-hundred mile hike along one of the world's oldest pagan pilgrimages - the path of the ancient sun worshipers to the supposed end of the earth.
Upon moving to St. Louis, MO in fall of 2014, the voice of Hannah Satterwhite was added to the mix, adding delicate and intricate vocal arrangements - not simply harmonizing, but crafting new lines to offer counterpoint and motion between the melody. Underlying Hannah's layer of vocal accompaniment, Kyle Butz lends minimalist instrumental arrangements built only to support the two interacting voices.
The Garden captures a particular moment, reflecting the living sound of Hazel Ra in St. Louis, and sound that will change, and grow, and be recaptured in it's new state somewhere in the future.
